Summertime
These early weeks of summer bring a distinctive feel to Parish life. Many of our indoor activities have brought their season to a close with a flurry of annual meetings and dinners. Youth activities continue outside with Cubs, Brownies, Guides and Scouts planning summer trips and camping holidays. Taney Lawn Tennis Club invites you to join them at the Parish courts adjacent to Old Rectory Park. Our services continue through the summer in Christ Church, Taney and in St. Nahi’s as normal. We look forward to seeing you when you are at home. When on holiday or enjoying a sunny weekend, if you are close to a church, drop in and worship with the local Christian community. They will appreciate your presence and support.
Taney Garden Fête
‘The Circus came to town’, the theme of Taney’s Garden Fete on Saturday June 12th, was as real on the ground as it was imaginative in concept. On a beautifully pleasant summer day, it was fun for all the family. The ‘Big Top’ erected by Harry Corrigan, Jim O’Neill and his team from Taney Scouts and Parish was awash with flags and bunting. The church grounds, covered with smaller marquees and tents with stalls strategically placed were a Mecca for the children with Bouncing Castles, face painting and a host of activities. Fancy Dress, with lots of clowns, their red noses glistening in the sun, brought its own splash of colour. The atmosphere was enlivened by the strains of Oom-Pah-Pah Jazz Band, appreciated by all as we sat around with our burgers followed by strawberries and cream. Raffles, ‘Guess the Weight’, all the usual favourite stalls from Granny’s Attic to Taney Outlet, from the Deli to the Books, Bric-a-Brac and Coffee Shop vied for the attention of the numerous bargain hunters. And all of this was brought together by the Fete Committee, Carol Eggers, Dave Murphy, Ciara Mileady, Jackie Rohu, Jennifer Armstrong and The Curates with a marvellous band of stallholders and helpers. A great result financially but socially the Fete was what we always wish for, a parish and its people ‘at home’ with a warmth of welcome to all in the community and beyond. To you who came along on the day and without whom it would never have happened, our thanks!
Farewell to Taney School Principal
Taney School PTA BBQ and Dinner in the grounds of St. Helen’s Raddisson was a superb tribute to our retiring Principal, William Stuart, to Nesta and to their family. Over three hundred parents, past and present gathered with School Staff on the night to say thank you and farewell to William. There were lots of prizes which amplified the fun and the warmth of the evening. The Rector, on behalf of the Board of Management, the Parish and the Community paid tribute to William for his work and achievements in ten years as Principal. He was a mentor to his staff and he knew all four hundred and forty children by name, working with dedication for their educational welfare. Wishing William every happiness in retirement, he was presented with a gift by Vanessa Greaney, Chairperson of Taney PTA, who added her warm tribute on behalf of the Parents and Teachers. In the midst of family, parents, teachers and friends, William signalled his ‘Farewell’ in his own inimitable way – speaking about ten happy and fulfilling years as Principal of Taney School. To William from us all – ‘ad multos annos’ of contentment and happiness in retirement.

NEWS FROM AROUND THE PARISH - Archived News
Taney News wins General Synod Prize
The winners of the Central Communications Board 2010 Communications Competition for the best newsletters/magazines, websites and innovative use of social media by individuals, parishes and dioceses were announced on Saturday 8 May, by the Archbishop of Armagh at the General Synod in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin.
In the Parish magazines/newsletters category, the judges felt that it was difficult to choose between many of the entrants and, although there were clear winners, all the entrants had qualities to recommend them.
* First prize: Taney Parish for ‘Taney News’.
This was praised as a publication with a clear statement of intent: noticeably an ambitious project evidencing risk, faith and organisation on the part of the parish. It successfully presented a vibrant parish life and possessed outreach potential as something someone would gladly pick up in a doctor’s waiting room; parish outreach concerning the developing world was also noted and commended. Taney is building on previous success, having been Highly Commended in the 2009 competition. The Prize was presented by the Archbishop of Armagh to Mrs Carole Pappin a Synod Representative and mother of the designer of Taney News, Karen Pappin.
The Tower Clock
The clock on three faces of the tower of Christ Church, Taney has not worked for a number of years. It was originally the gift of Naomi Overend in memory of her sister Letitia whose family lived in Airfield since the 1850’s. An assessment of the work involved in the restoration of the clock recommended the replacement of the existing clock system, dial restoration and the re-instatement of the hour strike. The work is now almost completed and could not have been achieved without substantial help from Drummartin Trust which was set up by the Misses Overend to administer the Airfield Farm for the enjoyment of the community. Our thanks also to Taney Bell-ringers who liaised with us on this restoration work within the tower. Full details will be available by the end of September on completion of the work. Photos of the restoration work can be found on the parish website.
Diocesan Synods
The Diocesan Synods of Dublin and Glendalough met in Taney on 20th and 21st October. The Synod opened with a Eucharist in Christ Church. Delivering his Presidential Address to the Dublin and Glendalough Diocesan Synods in the Parish Centre of Christ Church, Taney, the Archbishop of Dublin, the Most Rev'd Dr John Neill accused the Department of Education of mounting a "very determined and doctrinaire effort ... to strike at a sector which some officials totally failed to understand."

Junior Choir and Sunday School take part in S.S. Society Celebrations
The Sunday School Society marked its bi-centenary during 2009 and the climax of the celebrations was a Concert 'A Celebration of Childhood' on Friday 22nd May at 7.30pm in Rathfarnham Parish Church, Rathfarnham Village, Dublin 14.
The Concert included junior choirs from parishes in Dublin - Kilternan, Taney, Mount Merrion & Rathfarnham - Singer Imelda Morris and the Stedfast Band.
As part of the bi-centenary celebrations the dedicated charity has been Sightsavers International. The Society launched a Lenten Children's Project to raise money for the charity and many parishes from throughout the Church of Ireland have taken part. Taney Sunday School presented a cheque of €400 to the appeal.
Safeguarding Trust Audit
On April 20th, Mrs. Olive Good, the Diocesan Safeguarding Trust Officer conducted a triennial audit of the Safeguarding Trust provisions in the parish. Meeting with the three members of the Safeguarding Trust panel, Charlie Sloane, Beryl Tilson and Trilly Keatinge and the parish clergy, all aspects of health and safety and child protection were assessed. Whilst highlighting several areas for improvement, the parish was commended for the way in which Safeguarding Trust practice and procedures are implemented and Taney was described as being ‘near the top of the class’ in the Diocese.
All issues raised have now been rectified and further details are available from the parish panel members or the clergy. At this venture thanks and appreciation must be extended to all who work with children in the parish for their hard work and willingness to adapt to the requirements of Safeguarding Trust.
Wins for Taney!
The winners of the Central Communications Board 2009 Communications Competition for the best newsletters/magazines, websites and innovative use of new technologies by individuals, parishes and dioceses were announced on Sunday 10 May, by the Archbishop of Armagh at the General Synod in Armagh City Hotel.
The competition was independently judged by external media professionals.
In the Parish magazines/newsletters category, the judges said that they recognised that all of the entries in this category were of a particularly high standard and that it was extremely difficult to choose between them. They went on to say, ‘The winner had an imaginative use of graphics and space while the runner up provided particularly good production and good use of colour and pointers to both events and prayers.’
The best parish magazine was won by the Parish of Castledermot and Kinnegh, Narraghmore and Timolin (‘Four Churches One Parish’), which was praised for being packed with news and information along with a very readable exposition of Lent in its March issue. It showed good evidence of imagination and creativity.
The runner-up was ‘The Columban’, the magazine of St Columba’s Parish, Knock, Belfast. The judges praised its good use of colour, its pleasing, fresh look and good choice of articles and production values.
Finally in this category, ‘Taney News’ from Taney Parish, Dundrum, Dublin, was ‘highly commended’, praised as ‘fresh and readable’ with a good use of pictures and attractive front page.
In the Websites category the external judge particularly looked for something more than mere information, such as interactivity, video, audio, etc. It was felt that the best sites make the viewer feel included, invited into a community, creating a coherent impression of the church itself.
In the Parish websites category, St Mary’s Parish , Ballybeen’s fresh and attractive site scooped first place, with Taney Parish in second place, praised for its attractive design and current content.
